Spotify Expands Video Access for Premium Subscribers

Spotify has announced that it will make music videos available to premium users in the U.S. and Canada, furthering its goal to compete with YouTube for a larger share of the digital media market. This initiative follows a beta launch that occurred in nearly 100 international markets last year.

By incorporating video content, Spotify aims to deliver a more engaging experience for listeners, which could lead to increased user retention and attract more advertisers. The platform has noted that when fans discover a song accompanied by a music video, they are 34% more likely to stream that track again and 24% more likely to save or share it within the week.

The initial catalog of music videos will feature artists including Ariana Grande, Olivia Dean, BABYMONSTER, and Addison Rae. This move is part of Spotify’s broader strategy to enhance its offerings and compete more effectively against services from Apple and Amazon, which also provide music streaming options.

In addition to the rollout of music videos, Spotify recently released its year-end Wrapped feature, showcasing users’ listening habits. This year’s Wrapped saw over 200 million users engage with the feature within the first 24 hours, reflecting a 19% increase compared to the previous year. CFO Christian Luiga emphasized the importance of user engagement as a key metric for the company, sometimes even more critical than the total user base.

Looking ahead, reports suggest that Spotify plans to increase its subscription prices in the U.S. during the first quarter of next year. This follows a price hike for its premium individual plan in over 150 markets earlier this year, as the company seeks to boost its earnings growth.

Additionally, Spotify’s founder and CEO, Daniel Ek, is set to transition to the role of executive chairman in January. These changes signal Spotify’s ongoing evolution in a competitive landscape that continues to challenge its market position.

Engagement and innovation remain vital for Spotify as it navigates the complexities of the music industry.
