A Lifetime Dedicated to Music Education
Randall Johnson, a distinguished figure in Guam’s music community, has devoted decades to nurturing musical talent. After retiring from his role as a music professor at the University of Guam, he continues to inspire students as an instructor at Guam Community College. His unwavering commitment to music education has left an indelible mark on countless aspiring musicians.
‘Ragnarök (Destiny of the Gods)’: A Composition Rooted in Heritage
Johnson’s latest choral work, “Ragnarök (Destiny of the Gods),” draws inspiration from his Scandinavian roots and Norse mythology. Commissioned for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Honor Choir, the piece was tailored for a choir of 322 boys from all 50 states and several international participants. Johnson aimed to create a composition that resonated with the young singers, stating, “Why not do something that is fun for them.”
He immersed himself in the Poetic Edda, particularly the Völuspá (The Seeress’s Prophecy), to craft the text for “Ragnarök,” which narrates epic battles culminating in the death of Odin by the giant wolf Fenrir, followed by a rebirth of peace led by Baldr, the god of beauty and light.
International Recognition and Promotion
The composition’s excellence was acknowledged by Santa Barbara Music Publishing Inc., which bestowed upon it the Editor’s Choice award. David Harlow of Santa Barbara Music Publishing highlighted that this accolade would lead to significant promotion upon the score’s official release on March 23rd. Johnson expressed his delight, noting that despite decades of publishing original compositions, this recognition holds special significance.
Collaboration with Renowned Choral Educators
The commission materialized largely due to Johnson’s collaboration with esteemed choral educator Randy Stenson, who directed this year’s ACDA National Honor Choir. Johnson is the principal contributor to Stenson’s choral series, a testament to their enduring professional relationship. The Stensons recently participated in the 2025 Tumon Bay Music Festival, with Randy serving as adjudicating faculty, visiting schools, conducting workshops, and leading Concordia, the festival’s massed choir, during the finale concert on March 8 at Micronesia Mall. Their global reputation as leading choral music educators underscores the significance of Johnson’s commission.
A Milestone in a Distinguished Career
For Johnson, having “Ragnarök” premiered by the National Honor Choir marks a career milestone. While he has composed pieces for various choirs, this is the first time his work has been featured at the national level by such a prestigious ensemble. This achievement not only elevates his status as a composer but also shines a spotlight on Guam’s vibrant musical community.
Embracing Norse Mythology: The Tale of Ragnarök
The term “Ragnarök” in Norse mythology signifies the prophesied apocalypse, detailing a series of events, including a great battle leading to the death of major gods like Odin and Thor, natural disasters, and the submersion of the world in water. This mythological narrative has been a source of inspiration across various art forms, reflecting themes of destruction and rebirth.
