DIVAS Simply Singing! Raises Awareness and Celebrates 35 Years (Photos)

Held at the elegant Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California, the event raised awareness for health issues, with a focus on HIV/AIDS.

For over three decades, DIVAS Simply Singing! has been a beacon of health advocacy, using music and performance to promote awareness and bring attention to health disparities. Founded by Ralph and supported by The DIVA Foundation, the gala has evolved from a tribute to the early days of the AIDS crisis into a cultural touchstone in the fight for public health.

This year’s event, sponsored by Gilead Sciences, celebrated the achievements of the past 35 years with a series of powerful performances, tributes, and calls to action. The DIVA Foundation’s mission continues to inspire and educate through artistic activism, offering a platform for music and community to drive change.

Honoring Exceptional Leaders

The DIVA Honors, presented at the gala, spotlighted individuals who have made groundbreaking contributions to health advocacy, HIV/AIDS awareness, and community building. This year’s honorees included:

Rev. Debra Fraser-Howze, who received the Inaugural Visionary Award for her outstanding leadership in HIV/AIDS awareness and health equity.

Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., legendary entertainers, who were awarded the Legacy of Love Humanitarian Honor for their philanthropic work and dedication to music and love.

Jewel Thais-Williams, the late founder of the historic Catch One nightclub, who was posthumously honored with the Ivy Ralph Legend of Distinction Award for her tireless advocacy and community activism.

Dr. Maya Green, Chief Medical Officer at Onyx Medical Wellness, honored with the Wellness Warrior Award for her contributions to public health and HIV care.

Lula Washington, choreographer and founder of the Lula Washington Dance Theatre, recognized with the Artistic Activism Award for her lifelong dedication to using the arts for social change.

A Night to Remember

The evening was filled with performances that left the audience captivated. Notable highlights included:

Gina Yashere, whose sharp wit had everyone laughing.

Larry Owens, who delivered a moving rendition of “Hallelujah Baby (I Don’t Know Where She Got It).”

803 Fresh, who energized the crowd with “Boots on the Ground.”

Mickey Guyton, who brought country flair with “Lay It On Me.”

Lalah Hathaway, who poured her soul into “Mirror.”

Jenifer Lewis, whose performance of “Black Don’t Crack” was filled with energy.

Lisa Ann Walter, who delivered a stirring Call to Action.

Freda Payne, whose performance of “Here’s to Life” resonated deeply.

James and Gina Pickens, who shared a heartfelt duet of “It Takes Two” and donated $10,000 to The DIVA Foundation for prostate health.

Sheryl Lee Ralph, who stunned with a heartfelt rendition of “I Dream a Dream.”

India Shawn, who dazzled with a “Diamonds Are Forever / Gone” medley.

Loretta Devine, who enchanted the audience with “Throw It Away.”

Andra Day, whose anthemic “Rise Up” closed the evening with a powerful sing-along finale.

Reflecting on the enduring impact of the gala, Ralph shared, “For thirty-five years, we have been singing for our lives, health, and community. The DIVA Foundation has always stood for love in action. This night is about honoring the people and the purpose that keeps that song alive.”
