Guy Snowdon's Journey from England to Cleveland Amid Streaming Challenges

A New Beginning in Cleveland

Guy Snowdon’s journey to Cleveland Heights is a tale of serendipity. Nine years ago, he relocated with his wife and young daughter from Birmingham, England, after his wife received a job promotion with her company in Ohio. Prior to the move, Snowdon had little knowledge of the region, gaining his first impression through tourism videos showcasing the vibrant city life and scenic lakefront.

Realizing His Dreams

One video, in particular, caught his attention—a performance at the Music Box Supper Club, which he later had the opportunity to grace with his own music. Soon after relocating, Snowdon conceptualized a tribute project centered around his musical idol, Harry Nilsson. A friend suggested he pitch his idea to David Spero, who, unbeknownst to Snowdon, was Nilsson’s last manager. While Spero initially dismissed the tribute concept, he recognized Snowdon’s potential and advised him to establish a band to build his reputation.

Forming a Band

Heeding Spero’s guidance, Snowdon formed Guy Snowdon and the Citizens. The band blends influences from British rock and American hair metal, drawing on the sounds of the ’80s Sunset Strip and ’90s Brit-pop. Their music features powerful guitars, bluesy rhythms, and harmonies reminiscent of rock legends. Regular collaborators include guitarist Greg Hido, drummer Matt Schieferstein, and vocalist Tanisha Salary, creating a lineup that has performed throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Michigan.

Recent Success and Distribution Deal

Snowdon’s band has consistently released new music, including studio albums titled “One” (2021), “Two” (2024), and the upcoming “Three” (scheduled for 2025). This summer, the Citizens signed a distribution deal with Young Outlaw Music, which, despite being an independent label, distributes through major players like Universal Music and Virgin Music Group. Snowdon recognized the importance of being associated with a record label, believing it would lead to better opportunities in promotion and booking.

Streaming Setbacks

However, Snowdon’s journey took a tumultuous turn in October when he received an alarming email from his digital distribution service, TuneCore. Spotify had flagged his song “Desert” for alleged “artificial streams,” leading to its removal from all major platforms, including Apple Music and YouTube. Despite the sudden spike in plays coinciding with his label’s promotional efforts, he found himself penalized without a thorough review of his case.

Industry Challenges

This incident highlights significant issues faced by independent musicians. Automated algorithms can impose harsh penalties without adequate human oversight, leaving artists vulnerable. Snowdon articulated the frustration of navigating a system that often favors major labels, which have the resources to resolve disputes swiftly. He raised concerns that without transparency, legitimate artists may be unjustly penalized, particularly those just starting out.

A Call to Action

While his music has since been restored, the repercussions of the incident remain. The metadata associated with his tracks has been erased, and royalties from the penalty period were not reinstated. Snowdon views this as a battle worth fighting, emphasizing the systemic imbalances that exist in the industry. He encourages fans to support local artists by attending live performances, as this direct engagement can make a significant difference for musicians. He plans to take his band on the road next year, aiming to foster a greater appreciation for original music.

For those interested in supporting independent music, consider attending a local gig. Tickets are often affordable, and you can discover incredible talent you’ve never heard before. To learn more about the challenges facing artists in the streaming landscape, visit RIAA.
