Founded in 2008 by historian and filmmaker Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and former Washington Post Publisher Donald E. Graham, The Root was created as a platform to celebrate Black voices, culture, and history with depth, intelligence, and unapologetic honesty.

Professor Gates, reflecting on the acquisition, expressed his pride in Allison’s leadership, emphasizing that The Root has always been a space where Black life is central, elevating the importance of Black voices in media. “The Root needed to be a front page in its own right,” Gates shared.

The acquisition is expected to maintain The Root’s dedication to cultural storytelling while introducing innovative multimedia formats and immersive experiences that push the boundaries of traditional journalism.

Rashad Robinson, a strategic advisor to Watering Hole Media and The Root, also expressed excitement about the acquisition, noting that The Root continues to play a vital role in elevating Black voices in crucial national conversations. He highlighted its role in providing an infrastructure for growing Black talent and reporting on important issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Allison’s leadership is rooted in her long-standing commitment to racial equity. She has worked extensively in political spaces and continues to offer insightful commentary on CNN. Earlier in her career, Allison taught special education in Brooklyn, New York, and later earned her master’s in education and a law degree in public interest law. Her dedication to public service also led to her appointment as a Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics Fellow in 2021.
